Once you’ve visited this unassuming organic market, it’s likely you’ll find your way back again . . . . and again. Not only because of the wonderful selection of organic products, but also because of the charm and dedication of the owners, Halime and Hakan Sozen. Originally from Instanbul, Turkey, the Sozens moved to the U.S. to provide a better life for their autistic son. Their interest in organic and gluten free foods stems from their son’s condition (a strict diet is recommended) and now it is their livelihood.
The shelves are well stocked with healthy products with labels that read certified organic, gluten free, wheat free, soy free, dairy free, and casein free. Some of the brands they carry include: Glutino, Ezekiel 4:9, Manitoba Harvest, Nutiva, Ener-g, Enjoy Life, Kinnikinnick, Spectrum Essential, Food for Life, Cell-nique, Kombucha. In the dry section, the products range from olive oil to cookies to nuts to canned foods and pasta. They also carry a well stocked refrigerated section of organic fruits and vegetables, dairy products, pizza crusts, bread, tortillas as well as bottled veggie juices and smoothies.
In addition to the grocery section they have a juice bar offering an all organic “Energy Bomb” which blends banana and walnuts with your choice of milk (almond, hemp, rice or soy) or apple juice and either maple syrup or honey. Other smoothie choices are Cashew butter, Re-Flax and Mango. Since they are made to order, you can choose any combination of fresh fruits and berries. Fresh wheat grass and Thai coconut are also available.
Halime makes fresh homemade soup daily. Her creations vary from day to day, but they always include a lovely variety of organic vegetables mixed into a tasty blend. For example: carrots, zucchini, celery, avocado, cabbage, coconut milk, coconut oil and spices –Yum! They are also quickly building a regular lunch clientele for their fresh, healthy and delicious wraps. They offer the following wraps and salads:
