Some seek solitude; others are primed for a rowdy time. Whatever their reason, it's this gateway to the Wekiva River that draws them in.
Home to both clueless canoeists and avid river rats -- not to mention a seasonal flock of turkey vultures, a pack of pampered cats, and the most patched-up rental fleet afloat -- the Wekiva Marina is a rustic Central Florida treasure.
A privately owned marina on six acres of valuable riverfront, it offers one of few public access points to the region's most scenic waterway -- one that runs through 36,000 acres of protected springs, cypress swamps, hardwood hammocks and pine flat woods.
Yet, the marina is just down from busy Wekiva Springs Road amid a maze of subdivisions and shopping strips in densely populated western Seminole County near its border with Orange County.
